About The Shirlette Collective
From Shirlette
The Shirlette Collective began with me, not as an organization, but as a person trying to build something better than what I was given.
For years, I moved through education, filmmaking, community work, grief spaces, and creative circles, watching the same patterns repeat. I saw how many people were being asked to survive systems that were never designed to support them. I saw how often stories were flattened, erased, or told without care. I saw how emotional survival was treated like an afterthought.
So I started building the spaces I couldn’t find.
Sometimes that looked like a film.
Sometimes it looked like a conversation.
Sometimes it looked like a classroom, a community event, a journal, a gathering, or a long night of planning with too much coffee.
Over time, those pieces began connecting. What started as individual projects slowly revealed itself as a living framework, a way of working that centers people, protects emotional survival, and treats creativity as a real-world tool for change.
This work is personal.
It is practical.
And it is ongoing.
To The Collective
The Shirlette Collective is the ecosystem that grew from that work.
We are a creative and community-forward civic engine building futures for the marginalized and our children. Our projects span storytelling, education, emotional wellness, mutual aid, and large-scale community design, all connected by a simple belief: people deserve systems that see them, support them, and make space for who they are becoming.
We believe creativity is not a luxury.
That community care is infrastructure.
That emotional survival matters.
That education must be reimagined.
And that the future is built by the people brave enough to start.
The Collective continues to evolve as the needs of the community evolve. Some of our work is intimate and immediate. Some of it is long-term and legacy-focused. All of it is rooted in care, intention, and a refusal to accept the world as it is.
This is a commitment.
